Being a parent can be incredibly overwhelming.
You find yourself struggling to get out of bed each morning, only to be met with a sense of dread and irritability as you try to move through your day. Even though it feels like you can't do it anymore, you get up and do it again anyway. Bathe the kids, feed the dogs, check on your aging parents, go to work, do the shopping, pay the bills, watch the news (yikes)... but why?
You wonder why life feels so hard and lonely sometimes.
You try not to stay there too long, asking why, because you know you should be grateful. You know so many people have it so much worse than you do, and you really do love so many aspects of your life, but things still feel heavy and hard. The laundry never ends, regardless of how much you work it seems like you can never get ahead, you feel resentful toward your partner for not showing up for you in the ways you need without having to explicitly ask, and you feel guilty for not being “happy enough.”
The guilt we feel as parents can be the absolute worst.
You lost your temper again, and even though you know you asked calmly three times before that, you also know it’s not your kids fault. You struggle to regulate your emotions as you carry the stress of the rest of the world and your to do list. You don’t necessarily have the best role models when it comes to parenting, and struggle to stop comparing your own experiences as a kid to the ones your providing your own children. You find yourself ruminating over the tense moments you have with your kids, and you worry your not giving your kids the childhood they deserve.
You don’t have to sit in those feelings alone.
I help parents who are struggling with finding the “why” in their day-to-day life move from a place of being critical about how they are responding to the world around them, to a place of curiosity. As we begin to better understand the needs and goals at the root of these responses, we begin to truly understand the barriers preventing you from living the life you want to live, confidently and authentically.
You need a break, and an identity outside of being a parent.
Parenting in America is no joke. So much of the time as parents we simply don’t have the support we need to truly take a break and pursue an identity outside of being a parent.
My name is Bailee Schnell, a Parent (and therapist) in Montana.
Together, my clients and I work to explore the current dynamics in their life when it comes to work, family, and identity, and set goals to create a life with more balance, support, and joy. My clients experience change over time in therapy, not just in their overall mood and perception of the world, but in their relationships, their outlook, and most importantly, how they feel about themselves.
For eight years now, I have been helping clients explore and identify the values that have been ingrained in them throughout their lives, then examine and refine them into values that resonate with the person, and parent, they are and want to be today. Together, we explore their life experiences as they tell me their story, and help me understand where they have come from and what they have been through. Through psychoeducation and therapy, clients learn to become kinder to and more confident in themselves, leading them to feel more present and in control of everyday life.
